President's Message

Thank you all for your support and the confidence you have shown in me by electing me as your President for the upcoming year. I would also like to thank our Immediate Past President, Justine Roe, for presiding over an extra ordinary year of meetings and challenges and doing so with the a level of excellence and professionalism.

I hope that you and your families are keeping safe during this difficult time as we work to beat the COVID-19 Pandemic. In order to be a part of the COVID-19 solution, our Board has decided that meetings for the remainder of the year will be virtual only. Your health and safety come first and although we miss the opportunity to meet in person, we believe this is the right choice to make.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has presented challenges to our Chapter that our Board of Directors is working to overcome. First and foremost is to get our educational season and meetings up and running. To do that we have investigated and are in the process of implementing a virtual meeting format. The first test of our new format was the July 28th Breakfast meeting. This was an important first step in preparing for the fall meeting schedule and I am happy to say, it was a big success! Many thanks to our newly formed Virtual Meeting Committee for this achievement.

Equally as challenging is converting our in-person educational and networking format to work on a virtual basis. Normally, we would be selecting interesting topics and speakers for our dinner meetings, which in and of itself is a challenge, this year we also have to consider what will work best on a virtual format.

In challenging times, we can choose to shrink back or face the challenge and come out stronger. With the support of our loyal IMA Membership, an insightful and talented Board, and the strong support of our Parent Organization, IMA Global, our Chapter will emerge stronger and more relevant than ever. I, and the Board of Directors of the LI Chapter, thank you for your continued support and look forward to seeing and hearing from you at our virtual meetings.

James L. Smith, CPA
President, Long Island Chapter of the IMA
